Automation Engineer
Job Title: Automation Engineer
Location: Eindhoven, The Netherlands
Department: Research & Development
Reports to: Head of R&D
Experience: 3–5 years minimum
Company Overview:
MicroAlign is a photonics company dedicated to developing the next generation of Photonic Alignment in the field of optics and photonics. Our innovative solutions cater to various industries like quantum computing and communications. We are committed to pushing the boundaries of photonics packaging technologies to create impactful products that revolutionize the way we interact with light.
Job Description:
We are looking for an experienced Automation Engineer to lead the transformation of our production line from a fully manual operation to a semi-automated and, ultimately, fully automated system. You will be a key driver in increasing throughput, reducing cycle times, and freeing up operator time. This role requires both strategic thinking and a strong technical ability to design and implement automation solutions that are robust, scalable, and ready for high-volume manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the current manual production line and identify automation opportunities with the highest impact on throughput and operator efficiency.
- Design, specify, and implement semi-automated and fully automated work cells, including gantry systems, pick and place tooling and ultra precise positioning.
- Select and integrate appropriate drive systems, servo motors, stepper systems, pneumatics, and control hardware.
- Develop and commission PLC/motion controller programs and HMI interfaces for automated systems.
- Define and implement motion profiles, sequencing logic, and safety interlocks in line with CE/machine safety standards.
- Work with equipment suppliers and system integrators to deliver on-time, on-budget automation projects.
- Conduct FAT/SAT testing, validation, and handover to production teams with full documentation.
- Continuously monitor and improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) on automated lines.
- Train operators and maintenance staff on new automated systems.
What We Are Looking For
Technical Skills
- Strong mechanical design knowledge: fixtures, frames, cams, linkages, tolerancing for high-volume production.
- Solid understanding of control systems: PLC programming, PID control, servo drives, and fieldbus communication.
- Experience with motion planning: coordinated multi-axis motion, pick-and-place systems, or collaborative robots (cobots).
- Familiarity with vision systems, sensors, and quality inspection integration.
- Knowledge of machine safety standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061) and CE marking processes.
Mindset & Soft Skills
- Pragmatic and results-driven: you balance ideal solutions with production realities and short implementation times.
- High autonomy in managing your own projects and ensuring timelines are on track.
- Strong communicator who can bridge the gap between engineering, operations, and management.
- Highly independent and proactive in identifying and solving production bottlenecks.
Requirements
- Master’s degree or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum 3–5 years of proven experience in industrial automation, preferably in a manufacturing scale-up or high-volume production environment.
- Demonstrable track record of successfully delivering automation projects from concept to running production.
